Cheesy-Ohion Biscuits
Great for camping
- 2 cups flour
- 3 tsp. Baking powder
- pinch of salt
- 3 T. shortening (melted)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 6 green onions
- 1 cup fine grated cheese of choice
- finely chop the green tops of the onions.
- Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt up in a large bowl.
- Sprinkle in a handfull of the fine chopped green onion tops. Mix well.
- sprinkle in the grated cheese while continuously stiring to evenly distribute it through the mixture
- Add shortening and mix well.
- Add milk and mix quickly and lightly. DO NOT over mix, and DO NOT knead.
Working the dough into 1 large dough ball that will not stick to the sides of the bowl.
- Flour your hands and pinch off a lemon sized chunk of the dough and roll into a ball,
- Place the balls of dough into a dutch oven or pan. (sides just touching).
- Put coal under and on top of dutch oven and bake until browned.
Or 400 for about 10 minutes in a regular oven.
- Before they start to brown but are semi cooked, remove the lid and paint the tops of the biscuits with a stick of butter.
Makes about 16 biscuits.
