Parkersburg, W. Va.

  • John Lessell was born in Mettlach, Germany
  • 1988-1899 worked for the Ford City China Co
  • 1903 worked for the Bohemian Art Pottery PA
  • 1903 he was one of the founders of the Arc-En-Ciel Pottery Company in Zanesville, Ohio
  • Worked for Owens China in developing the "Swastika Keramos" Line
  • Worked for J B Owens Pottery producing a line of Luster ware similar to LaSa line which he later designed for Weller
  • 1911-1913 operated the Lessell Art Ware Co in Parkersburg (a great uncle of mine worked for him)
  • 1916 applied for a patent for a new decorating process
  • 1920 hired as Art Director at Weller
  • While at Weller he created several art lines including, LaSa, Lamar, Marengo, Besline, Cloudburst, and Chengtu
  • 1924 head art expert at Art China Company of Zanesville, Ohio.
    This company operated less than a year
  • Early 1926 Lessell and his wife Jennie went to Camden, Arkansas to work at the Camden Art Pottery, where he developed several lines reminescent of those he had created earlier.
    the "Lessell" Line was almost an exact replica of Marengo, often marked Lessell on the decorated surface, Le-Camark was a reproduction of the LaSa line, and the Mirror Black line similar to Sudanese
  • John Lessell died in 1926 in Newark, Ohio and was buried in Zanesville. Mrs Lessell remained at Camden
