East Liverpool, Ohio

  • 1853 Isaac Knowles & Isaac Harvey were in partnership, operating a store boat along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers
    Merchandise included pottery, glass, kitchenware and staples
  • 1854 they founded a factory for the production of yellow ware, exapanding to bisque and other ware
  • 1856 Knowles bought out Harvey's interest
  • 1870 Isaacs son Homer Knowles, and John W Taylor Isaacs son-in-law, joined the business.
    The name became Knowles, Taylor & Knowles
  • 1872 they added white granite ware to the lines
  • 1888 they built a new plant Art China Works. The building burned immediately but was rebuilt
  • also in 1888, Joseph G Lee and Willis A Knowles joined the firm
  • 1891 they incorporated
  • 1889 they were producing Lotus Ware
  • by 1901 they operated 35 kilns and employeed 700 people
  • 1929 they merged with the American China Corporation which failed due to the depression
