Ellsworth, Kansas and Hot Springs, AR

  • James Dryden, Jr's(b1917) first wares were sold out of his fathers Ellsworth store
  • 1942 he married Helen Maloney
  • 1942-46 wartime service in the Pacific
  • 1946 Opened Dryden Pottery
  • 1954 to 1956, Dryden made pottery for Van Briggle Pottery they are signed Anna Van Briggle and will usually have a drip glaze over a solid glaze
  • 1956 moved the pottery to Hot Springs, AR
  • Clays;
    Kansas clay was buff colored, and the ware made in Arkansas was a white clay from Tennessee
  • Marks;
    Kansas (1946-1956) with the shape number also scratched into the clay.
    Hand-thrown pieces are marked with a Dryden signature and a `9 and another number, such as a 2 - which would mean the piece was produced in 1992.
    The molded pottery has a raised Dryden mold mark.
