Ernest Allan Batchelder(1875-1957)

  • born in Nashua, New Hampshire.
  • He was educated at the Massachusetts Normal Art School (grad. 1899). and the Harvard Summer School of Design
  • 1902(4) Director of Art at the Throop Polytechnic Institute till 1909
  • 1903 Helped found the Minneapolis Handcraft School
  • 1904 He published Principles of Design
  • 1909 began production of decorative tile 626 Arroyo Drive, moved to Arrovo Parkway,
  • 1910 published Design in Threory and Practice
  • 1915 earned a gold medal at the San Diego Exposition
  • 1916 moved to a factory on Artesian Street in Los Angeles
  • 1932 His firm failed during the Great Depression and the Tile Company assets were sold to Bauer
  • rented a small shop on Kinneloa Street in Pasadena, besides the tile he now called "Kinneloa Tile" he turned out extremely fragile slip cast wares, very different from his earlier work. He continued to make pottery until the early 1950s
