[ Matthew Adams on eBay ]
- Matthew Adams was born and raised in Japan as a British subject. He attended prep school in Victoria, British Columbia (Canada). He went on to studies at the Cornish School of Arts in Seattle for approximately 3 years.
- In 1953, Matthew worked for Sascha Brastoff at the California Pottery studio where he produced the Alaska pottery line. All of the Alaska line pieces at that time were signed "Sascha B".
- He left Brastoff's employment in 1954.
- He created the Alaskan line for Josephine Lynn at the McKinley Gift Shop in Anchorage. The pottery was made in California, from his studio, then shipped to souvenir shops in Alaska.
- Each piece was hand painted and signed by Matthew himself, after the first firing. No two pieces are alike. He had one person working for him who cleaned the greenware and painted the first coat.
- In some cases, pieces were simply signed "Adams", some pieces have no Alaska logo or inventory number on them.
- The Ketchikan Trading Post requested a handwritten "Alaska" put on the pieces and Matthew began to put the Black "Alaska" logo on the bottoms of all the pieces. Most gift shops had their own paper labels and put them on their stock.
- The "Alaska" logo in gold was added to the pottery in the 1980's.
- Matthew continued to produce his pottery until he retired in 1998.
